  • Dr. Donald Yu Man Ching is a Hong Kong born Chinese contemporary classical music composer, pianist, music theory lecturer as well as a conductor who frequently and actively premieres his own works as a pianist in public locally and internationally. Being a prolific composer, since early age he has composed over hundreds original works. The stylistic traits of his recent works are characterized by the intermingling of the expressive and lyrical language of atonality, stylistic diatonicism with new tonality, and Chinese color while sometimes blending with micro-polyphonic musical materials.

    Born in 1980, Dr. Yu started learning piano, theory, conducting and composition at an early age in Hong Kong while at the age of 16 he made his debut twice as a piano soloist with Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, and earned a Licentiate Diploma (LRSM) in piano performance from the Royal Schools of Music. In 2004 he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Baylor University, studying piano under scholarships with Krassimira Jordan who is esteemed a Mozart interpreter and Yu also studied advanced composition and conducting at the same time in Baylor. In 2007 he was awarded a scholarship to pursue his composition study at the International Summer Academy of the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg where he earned a diploma as well as in 2008 summer also joined the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music in Germany. Later in 2010 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in composition and music theory under a full scholarship at Hong Kong Baptist University under the supervision of Christopher Keyes, with the music theory thesis “The Pitch-class Formation of Joseph Schwantner's Distant Runes and Incantations," and its main analytical methodology is set theory.

    Dr. Yu is quite prolific and has composed over hundreds scores in various genres ranging from instrumental, vocal and chamber works to opera, choral and symphonic works. Most of the pieces have been frequently and actively performed internationally at various concerts, festivals, and conferences throughout the United States including Texas, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Iowa, Maryland, and Georgia as well as Mexico, England, Italy, Ukraine, Austria, Australia, Indonesia, and Hong Kong including the recent 17th International Festival of Modern Arts: Two Days and Two Nights of New Music at the Odessa Philharmonic Theater (the Ukrainian Section of ISCM), the 6th Yogyakarta Contemporary Music Festival, the 2007 Internationale Sommerakademie Mozarteum in Salzburg, the 17th Australasian Computer Music Conference in Brisbane, the 3rd Cortona Contemporary Music festival in Italy and others. His doctorate music theory thesis was presented and published at the 9th international Music Theory and Analysis Conference in Serbia in 2011. In 2010 Yu received international acclaims with the performances of his First Symphony which was premiered by the Lugansk Academic Philharmonic Orchestra at the Lugansk Philharmonic Hall under the baton of Serjij Chernyk and his Apocalypse for orchestra was premiered by the Chernivtsi Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra at the Chernivtsi Philharmonic Hall under the baton of Josyp Sozansky. Among other major venues where his works have been premiered include the world-renowned the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, Lviv Conservatory in Ukraine, Harvard University and various others. Yu has received commissions and/or performances from Opera Hong Kong Chorus, the Choral Fellows of the Harvard University Choir, Onondaga Civic Symphony Orchestra, Equinox Trio, Duo 46, Hong Kong Youth Choir, Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, New Score Chamber Orchestra, JSU Chamber Orchestra, Ithaca College as well as received awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers(ASCAP), Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council and others. From 2012 Yu serves as the composer-in-residence of the Tuen Mun Children Choir. Yu's music has been published by Edizioni Sconfinarte in Italy, Wehr's Music House in U.S. Florida, Zimbel Press in U.S. Massachusetts, Hong Kong Church Services Limited. His music recordings are released by Zimbel Records.

    Apart from mainly being a composer, Yu remains active as a performer and educator. As a pianist or collaborative pianist, he played a diverse repertoire and collaborated with numerous instrumentalists and vocalists. Since the age 18 he already started premiering his own works on stages overseas and locally. Recently Yu is also the founder, artistic director, composer-in-residence of the Hong Kong Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, appearing as a conductor and pianist for promoting educational concerts "Mozart Effects" as well as conducting his own composition in public. As a music theory lecturer, Yu taught advanced music theory and composition in various tertiary colleges and universities in Hong Kong since 2007.
